In the digital age, we find ourselves multiplied, our identities replicated, altered, circulated, and distributed across multiple platforms and digital spaces. FAILED EVOLUTION explores the new ways of being, seeing, and interacting that emerge from this proliferation of self-presentation.

Rather than revealing our true selves, these perpetual rearticulations extend identity to its breaking point. Constant updates, meant to represent progress and vitality, threaten to create selves that are depleted, rather than fulfilled. Duplicity becomes intrinsic to our daily existence, as we thrive off of our ability to shape the experience of ourselves for increasingly disparate audiences. Working in video, collage, and painting, the artists in FAILED EVOLUTION draw on the aesthetics, linguistic habits, and ways of seeing that are tied to these new experiences of the fractured self.
